Hey everyone! My name is Pete Larios and I am a volunteer on the ADEON cruise as well as a recent graduate of Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Right now we are about a one day steam from our first station off the coast of Florida and making about 11 knots. The seas are pretty calm, about 3 to 5 feet, with the forecast predicting even calmer weather through the middle of the week. The first two days of the trip were spent unpacking and securing everything in the labs, then finishing up with dinner in San Juan. Having some down time after a fire drill this morning, I spent the day gettin’ my science on by reading about passive and active bioacoustics and the experiments that we will be doing.

We couldn’t have asked for a better ship or crew. Food is served three times a day, with everything being served from a typical breakfast to marinated pork chops and grouper with mango salsa. The crew is very accommodating; not only friendly, but always willing to lend a helping hand and open for questions. This is my first trip out to sea, and I can’t wait to learn about what lies in the deep ocean!
